3rd Asian Pipeline Conference & Exhibition, 21-22 November 2007 at Istana Hotel, KL, Malaysia

Datuk (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim, Vice President, Research & Technology Division, PETRONAS who is also the President of Malaysian Gas Association and Vice President of the International Gas Union, today officiated the opening of the 3rd Asian Pipeline Conference & Exhibition 2007 at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur. En Ramlan A Malek, Vice President, Exploration and Production Business, PETRONAS delivered the Keynote Address. Held for 2 days, 21-22 November 2007, APCE 2007 is jointly organised by the ASCOPE Gas Centre and the Malaysian Gas Association. The Conference is an annual event to promote dialogue and information exchange between pipeline professionals within the region, especially amongst ASEAN countries.

This year‘s event comprises more than 250 delegates and guests from 16 countries, complemented with exhibitions by 17 local and international companies showcasing products and services along the value chain in the pipeline industry.

In his opening address, Datuk (Dr) Rahim emphasized the importance of dialogue between the pipeline industry and infrastructure financiers, noting the magnitude of Asia's emerging investment challenges coupled with increasingly complex projects. He said that Malaysian companies were achieving world “firsts” in the area of deepwater development, including many pipeline innovations.

He also emphasized the importance of professional development of young pipeline engineers, announcing that APCE would be funding an international study tour for two pipeline professionals.

Themed “Pipelines: Investing in Asia Energy Future”, the key areas of deliberation over the next 2 days will focus on pipeline investment, progress of the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline, international developments, issues relating to design and operation of pipelines and pipeline operations with particular regard to integrity management, corrosion, safety and skills development.

This Pipeline Conference & Exhibition is geared to be an international annual hallmark event in recognition of the specific needs and role of the pipeline industry in our region.
