MGA PLAYS HOST TO IGU-WGC2009 COMMITTEE MEETINGS AT HOTEL RASA SAYANG, PENANG, 21 – 22 FEBRUARY 2008
In the run-up to the 24th World Gas Conference 2009 (WGC2009) staged to be held on 5-9 October 2009 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, two IGU Working Committees held their meetings in Malaysia. The Programme Committee C (PGC) on Developing Markets chaired by Dr Farid Amin, General Manager of PETRONAS Corporate Planning Division and representative member of the Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) and the Working Committee (WOC) 5 on Utilisation chaired by Mr Jean Schweitzer of Denmark, congregated to deliberate on the related issues of the gas industry in preparation of papers to be presented at the WGC2009.


YBhg Datuk Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim, the President of MGA who is also Vice President, International Gas Union for the 2006-2009 Triennium and Vice President Research & Technology, PETRONAS welcomed the group of 38 members together with 12 accompanying personnel and spouses.


Over the 2-day period, the participants delved on a range of issues relating to the 2 gas-related topics on Developing Markets and Utilisation.

The IGU Programme Committee C (PGC C) on “Developing Gas Markets” held its 4th Committee meeting together with members from a diverse number of countries – including Brazil, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, South Korea and Trinidad & Tobago. There were 5 representations from Vniigaz and JSC Gazprom of Russian Federation. Moderated by Chairman Dr. Mohd. Farid Mohd. Amin of PETRONAS, Committee members were updated on existing and planned cross-border gas pipeline infrastructures inter-connecting the supply to the emerging gas market and also planned LNG import facilities.


The Meeting also deliberated on emerging issues and challenges aimed at developing strategic options towards developing gas markets and advancing gas utilisation in three regions of South, West & Central Asia; South America, and South Eastern Europe.

The IGU Working Committee 5 (WOC5) on “Gas Utilisation” held its 4th committee meeting with representation from Malaysia, the Russian Federation, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Japan, Croatia, Austria, Algeria , Slovenia and Czech Republic. The Study Groups within WOC 5 are working on the preparation of the next World Gas Conference (WGC) and the 2030 Outlook study that would cover the market changes over the next 20 years.
