The 5th Asian Pipeline Conference & Exhibition (APCE) 2009 was successfully held from 28-29 October at Sutera Harbour Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Datuk (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim, President of the International Gas Union (IGU) and also President of the Malaysian Gas Association (MGA), officiated the event which was attended by more than 100 participants comprising of delegates, speakers, exhibitors and visitors. Datuk Rahim in his address, called on the entire gas chain to think hard about access to the human capital needed to develop and operate the gas infrastructure especially with ageing infrastructure where the operational challenges will grow over time. He also shared on the role and benefits of the activities undertaken by IGU to the entire gas industry at the national, regional and international levels. The entire IGU work program is relevant to the pipeline sector given the critical role that pipelines play and are expected t continue to play, as efficient delivery systems linking supply with markets. Under the IGU Malaysian triennium 2009-2012, three dedicated task forces have been established to address the issues of building strategic human capital, nurturing future generations and geopolitics of natural gas.
The Conference is an annual event to promote dialogue and information exchange between pipeline professionals within the region, especially amongst ASEAN countries. It is also geared to be an international annual hallmark event in recognition of the specific needs and role of the pipeline industry in our region. Themed “Optimising Pipeline Performance By Harnessing Our Human Capital”, it recognizes the challenges in optimizing pipeline assets, challenging products mixes and maintaining pipeline flows in difficult operating environments. At the same time it also proving challenging to secure and develop the human resources.
