MGA FORUM 'M'sian Natural Gas Industry Outlook - Opportunities & Challenges', 14 May 2009, The Westin Hotel, KL

25 May 2009

MGA FORUM : Malaysian Natural Gas Industry Outlook – Opportunities & Challenges, 14 May 2009, the Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur The Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) hosted an interesting and lively Forum on the topic ‘Malaysian Natural Gas Industry Outlook – Opportunities & Challenges’ recently at the Westin Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. With the overwhelming support of more than 160 attendees including six (6) distinguished speakers, this inaugural forum organized by MGA, is considered a success. It has deliberated on the topics that were of great interest to the participants who hailed from companies which are directly or indirectly involved in the energy and gas-related sectors. Speakers from the Malaysian Energy Centre (PTM), the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, PETRONAS and MGA shared their views on the various aspects of ‘Opportunities & Challenges’ faced by the natural gas industry from the perspectives of industry policies and viewpoints of customers and suppliers. The lively questions and answers session attested to the rapt attention and keen interest generated amongst the participants on issues pertaining to the affairs of the natural gas industry in Malaysia.

MGA is committed to organize more such fora in the near future which will be aligned to address gas-related contemporary issues which are of great interest and would wield influential impact in one way or another on commercial businesses as well as on the daily living of the ordinary layman. Such Forum could also serve to provide a conducive platform for stakeholders i.e. gas suppliers, consumers, planners and policy makers of the natural gas industry to meet and exchange views with the concerted aim to contribute positively to the development, promotion and effective and efficient utilization of our gas resources while also to sustain and generate beneficial and value-added contributions to ‘move’ the gas industry in Malaysia to greater heights.

Whilst the Speakers expounded and shared on the various aspects of their expertise, the equally enthusiastic attendees participated actively in the question and answer during the round table session. Pertinent and pressing issues related to what are the most efficient utilizations for the finite gas resources, gas pricing and subsidy dilemma, issue of supply not being able to meet with domestic gas demand were touched on and debated to some extent. No concrete answers and solutions are expected as this Forum is not an authority on policy matters. Instead this Forum and more such Forum will be organized in future to serve as an useful repository and platform to channel concerns and to propose solutions for related bodies to consider for action to be taken for the mutual benefit of the natural gas industry.

MGA sincerely wishes for win-win cooperation and staunch support from the energy suppliers, policy makers, planners and consumers to join us in future Forum to sustain this effort to act as a well meaning gas spokesman to be instrumental and influential in pressing for concrete initiatives and actions which would further the efficient development, utilisation and promotion of the natural gas industry in Malaysia. Endowed with 88 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, our country ranked 13th largest in the world. We are committed to contribute to the maximization of the utilization and sustainable development of our finite scarce natural resources for the benefit of the country and for our next and future generations.
