Technical Visit to Gas Plants & Facilities in Bintulu & the Bakun Hydro Dam Project Site, 15-16 December 2009

15 Dec 2009

The Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) organised a technical visit to the Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), Asean Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd (ABF), Shell Middle Distillates Synthesis (SMDS) and Murphy Oil Sarawak’s Bintulu Onshore Receiving Facilities (BORF) and the Bakun Hydro Dam Project site on 15 – 16 December 2009. MGA members from AF Document Mgmt Services, Diamond Gas Holdings, Exact Energy, Into Solutions, Mitsui & Co. (Asia Pacific), Muhibbah Engineering, PETRONAS, PETRONAS Gas, Sabah Energy Corp., Totalmas Holding, Transwater, Cekap Technical Services, WGC 2012 Coordination Committee, and MGA Secretariat participated in the technical visit.

This event has been specially organised to provide opportunity for members to have access to onsite firsthand experience in visiting, viewing & gaining knowledge on the overall operations of the gas plant and facilities. The trip to the Bakun Hydro Dam project site is added to expose members to a tour and briefing on this national project before its commissioning by next year.

The group of 24 members of MGA were enlightened with an overview of the operations of the plants and facilities by the respective representatives from the 4 plants at the MLNG auditorium on 15 December 2009. Guided tours around the plant premises were conducted in the afternoon with the respective companies’ representatives giving running commentaries and answers to questions posed by the participants onboard the coach. Murphy Sarawak has extended the visit to BORF with a ‘walking tour’ of the facilities where the group, attired in protective personal equipment (PPE), were taken on foot around
the plant.

All the participants found the visit very beneficial, educational and knowledge enriching with the ‘on-the-spot’ learning and sharing of the overall operations of these plants.

Twenty two of the group members also visited the project site of the Bakun Hydro Dam on 16 December. Despite the long travelling time of nearly 7 ½ hours to and fro from Bintulu to Bakun and the bumpy rides on certain stretches of the journey, the participants were impressed with this mammoth national project and appreciative of the privilege of being able to experience and see the near completion and groundwork of the dam before its official commissioning. The presentation by Mr Ten Wuan Ping, Manager, Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd, on the construction and logistics of the dam was indeed very impressive and enlightening.

The technical trip has been well-received by attendees with favorable feedback on its benefits and usefulness for knowledge building and learning experience. There were also calls for more such trips to be organized next year to other plants and places of general interest to the gas and related industries.
On behalf of MGA, we wished to record our thanks and appreciation to the managements of MLNG, ABF, SMDS and Murphy Sarawak for granting of access for the site visits and for the warm hospitality accorded to the participants. Thank you to all the presentators and facilitators for the insightful sharing on the overall plant operations. Special thanks to MLNG for sponsoring the lunch on 15 December and to Mr Rhymie Rashidie of MLNG for coordinating for the presentations and site tours to all the 4 plants.
